Martin G. Hacala

Martin G. Hacala is ChairmanPresident and Chief Executive Officer of General Star.  He assumed the leadership of General Star in January 2015. Previously, Marty held a variety of senior underwriting and claims positions in General Star, Genesis, and Gen Re. Prior to joining the Gen Re group in 1997, Marty was a partner in the Washington, DC law firm of Ross, Dixon, and Masback, LLP, where his practice centered on insurance coverage litigation and counseling.  Marty also served as a Trial Attorney with the Civil Rights Division of the United States Department of Justice. He was appointed to that position through the Attorney General's Honors Program.  Marty received his AB and JD degrees with honors from St. Louis University.


Lane A. DeCoster

Lane A. DeCoster is a Senior Vice President, Chief Underwriting Officer, and Underwriting Services Division Manager of General Star.  He leads corporate underwriting, referral underwriting, actuarial pricing, data analytics, predictive modeling, coverage wording, state filings and regulatory compliance, and catastrophe management for enterprise risk management.  He has the same roles for Genesis.  Prior to assuming these positions for General Star in 2015, he was a Vice President and Senior Referral Officer for General Star and Genesis.  Lane’s career began at The Home Insurance Company as a commercial underwriter.  In 1987, Lane joined the Gen Re Group and held various reinsurance positions in underwriting, marketing, and management in Treaty, Casualty Facultative Programs, and initially Genesis.  Lane received a BS degree from the University of Vermont.

Joe Majsak

Regina Kirwan

Regina Kirwan is a Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of General Star.  Regina manages the Business Development Division which focuses on brand management, communication, product development and producer management.  Regina joined General Reinsurance as a Casualty Facultative Manager in 1996 and in 2015, Regina became the General Star Training Manager.   Prior to General Reinsurance,  Regina held various underwriting roles for insurance and reinsurance companies. Regina received her BA degree in Management-Marketing from Holy Family University. She is a graduate of the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania Insurance Executive Development Program and has also obtained her CPCU designation. 

Cole Palmer

Cole Palmer

Cole Palmer is a Senior Vice President of General Star and is the Underwriting Manager of the Casualty and Professional Brokerage Division. He joined General Star in 1989 in the New York branch and has worked in both the Excess and Primary Casualty Divisions. Prior to joining General Star, Cole was a property and casualty insurance agent. Cole is a graduate of the University of Connecticut.

James Baldyga

James Baldyga

James Baldyga is a Vice President of General Star and Practice Group Manager of the Medical Professional Unit. Prior to joining General Star in 2009, Jim held senior underwriting and management roles at several national medical malpractice companies. He is a graduate of The Catholic University of America, Washington, DC.

John Nunneley

John Nunneley

John Nunneley is a Senior Vice President of General Star and Underwriting Manager of the Property Brokerage Division. John joined General Reinsurance as a Property Facultative Underwriter in 1985 and held numerous positions in the department prior to joining General Star in 2007. John is a graduate of the University of Georgia.

Matthew Brown

Matthew Brown is a Senior Vice President of General Star and Underwriting Manager of the Delegated Division. Matt joined General Star in 2000 as an underwriter in the Casualty Brokerage Division. In 2007, he was promoted to Manager of the Los Angeles Casualty Branch. Matt is a graduate of Long Beach State and has obtained his CPCU designation.

Tom Gersch

Thomas Gersch

Tom Gersch is a Vice President of General Star and Underwriting Manager of the Programs Unit.
Tom joined General Star in 2003 at the launch of the E&O division. Prior to joining General Star, Tom was responsible for underwriting numerous E&O product lines. Tom is a graduate of the University of Illinois at Chicago and is a member of the Professional Liability Underwriting Society.


Ted Gaisford

Ted Gaisford is Senior Vice President and Division Manager of the GenStar and Genesis Claim Department. Ted joined GenStar in 1995 as a Claim Examiner in the Los Angeles Branch, handling primary and excess casualty claims. In 1997 he was promoted to the Los Angeles Branch Claim Manager; he maintained that role until 2009, when he was promoted to Unit Manager for the Professional Liability Claim Unit in Chicago. Ted became the Unit Manager for the Genesis Claim Unit in 2014 and maintained that role until he was promoted to his current position. Ted is a graduate of San Jose State University and has earned his CPCU, RPLU+, ARM and ARM-P designations.


Robert Sharrer

Robert Sharrer is Senior Vice President of Finance and Accounting for General Star.  Robert joined General Star in 1987 as a client accountant in the New York branch.  He has held a variety of client, statutory and management accounting roles in General Star, Genesis and General Re Global Finance.  He assumed his current role managing Finance and Accounting for General Star in 2008.  Robert received his  BA from Vassar College and his MBA in Accounting from Fairleigh Dickinson University.   He has obtained his CPCU, AIAF and ARe designations.


Candice Davies

Candice Davies is Vice President of the Technology Strategy Division. Candice joined the General Re Group in 1999 as an IT Application Developer, later managing global business applications. In 2005 she moved to support business operations for both General Star, Genesis and in 2017 assumed responsibility for business technology. Candice is a graduate of the Chubb Institute of Technology and has obtained her CPCU, AIAF and AIC designations.
